Wetland construction is a relatively new science. While wetlands have been successfully created by design (and by accident) for many years, there is a history of failed wetland construction projects that have resulted in the perception that wetland creation is difficult to implement and risky to enforce.

Wetland Mitigation Inc. (WMI) is owned and managed by registered landscape architects, professional wetland scientists and environmental planners with a cumulative total of more than 100 years of experience in the fields of applied ecology, hydrology, botany, geology and landscape design and implementation. This combination of experience is unparalleled in the landscape contracting business. We employ field staff who are experienced in site preparation and hand planting of wetlands in a wide variety of environments. Our project manager will work hands on and stay involved over multiple seasons to ensure the success of the wetland based on functional goals agreed upon by regulating agencies.

WMI has exclusive access to existing wetland nursery lands where wetland plants are propagated and readily available for landscape programs. The company also uses an extensive network of wholesale nurseries for plant materials suitable for a wide range of drier transition environments (such as side slopes of retention basins), wetter areas that are seasonally saturated (marshes and scrub/shrub swamps), and underwater littoral zones where submergent vegetation is warranted. Our planting programs are implemented in the Northeast between April and November.

Our field staff is also available to remove, by hand if needed, sediments and deposits in stormwater management facilities, then re-plant as necessary.

Wetland failures occur because of poor design, improper implementation, and insufficient follow-up monitoring to ensure that desired species thrive. Traditional landscape contractors have little or no expertise in achieving long term success of planted wetlands and little or no investment in the outcome. Stringent attention is needed to produce results that are consistent with the goals of the wetland design. At WMI, we understand that proper management of wetland hydrology and environmental conditions are key to long term success. Specified plantings need to be closely watched, and sometimes supplemented with follow-up plantings. Invasive species must be weeded out.
